Here you can see the impact and influence of the Ancestral Peoples on the land and culture from the distant past to the present day.
Gallup is also home to three major annual events that showcase and celebrate Native American arts and culture: the annual Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, the Gallup Native Arts Market, and the Summer Nightly Indian Dances.
Every August, you’ll find the lively Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, one of the City and State’s oldest events. This annual event started in 1922 and showcases diverse intertribal culture, performances, and art in both traditional and contemporary presentations. Thousands of people come together in Red Rock Park for a celebration of Native American and Indian heritage and empowerment through songs, Pow-wow dances, pageants, rodeos, artisan markets, and more.
Throughout the summer, experience the authentic traditional dances from area tribes outside the Gallup Cultural Center. These interactive performances feature traditional instruments, singing, and dancing as well as an educational aspect as participants share explanations regarding the cultural traditions that surround these dances.
The Gallup area is home to over 1,000 Native American Artisans creating unique works in jewelry, pottery, basket weaving, rug weavings, sculptures, unique textiles and paintings. For many, artisan skills have been passed down for generations. From indoor markets to local boutiques, by shopping local you will be directly impacting the Indigenous community and supporting the talented artisans who hand make many of these pieces.
Trading posts have been a part of the Native American experience for more than a century. Originally, a place where goods and services could be traded among Anglos and Native American Tribes, overtime they became bustling community hubs and artisan markets.
Just outside of Gallup, you'll find Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest continuously operating trading post in the American Southwest. For generations, Hubbell’s has been the top place to buy high-quality Navajo rugs and jewelry.
